A former employee of La Tuna Federal Correctional Institution in Anthony, Texas, is speaking out about the recent announcement that the facility will close, resulting in layoffs for approximately 230 staff members.
Concerns Over Closure
The former employee, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that La Tuna needs around 250 staff members to be fully staffed. The Department of Justice’s Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) cited decades of deferred maintenance and extreme staffing challenges as the reasons for the closure.
Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (D-Texas) expressed her disappointment that the BOP did not inform her or other appropriators about the plan to shut down the prison during the appropriations process. The closure is expected to impact El Paso constituents who work at the facility.
