LA Showrunners Discuss AI Threat

LOS ANGELES — Six showrunners recently shared their thoughts on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the entertainment industry. The group, which included Megan Gallagher, Jonathan Glatzer, Andrew Guest, Bruce Miller, Michael Patrick King, and Sonja Warfield, discussed the potential threats and benefits of AI in their work.

AI and Storytelling

The showrunners agreed that AI is not yet capable of replacing human storytellers. As Guest noted, “If AI could do our jobs as writers, it would be doing it. Believe me, there’s plenty of people who are trying to get AI to do our jobs and it’s not working. People look to storytelling for something very specific. And AI is collective information. You don’t go to a story for a collective point of view on the world, you want your point of view.”

King added that AI lacks the lived experience that human writers bring to their work. “No matter how much AI learns, AI doesn’t have any experience. … If you haven’t lived through something, how on earth can you tell that?” Warfield also pointed out that AI is not always accurate, citing an example from her work on a historical drama where AI provided incorrect information about a historical event.

Keeping Production in LA

The showrunners also discussed the importance of keeping production in Los Angeles. While they acknowledged the challenges of working in LA, they emphasized the value of the city’s talent pool and infrastructure. As Miller noted, “You can’t candy-coat it, but on the other hand, what do you show so that the audience gets the idea without not being able to watch the television show?”
