Logan Square’s La Placita, a newly redesigned plaza, has become a boon for local businesses. The plaza features more outdoor seating, weekly art events, and added crosswalks, which have increased foot traffic and sales for nearby shops.
Business Owners Weigh In
Trish Carnevale, owner of Pixie & The Boy, a gift shop at 2605 N. Milwaukee Ave., has seen a significant increase in sales since the plaza’s completion. The new crosswalk in front of her shop has been particularly helpful, with a longer light that has increased visibility and foot traffic.
Other business owners, such as Tonya Pyatt and Nik Wells of Webster Wine Bar, have also seen an increase in customers. The added pedestrian space has made the area more walkable and attractive to visitors.
However, some business owners have expressed concerns about loitering, loud music, and public intoxication in the area. Le Trinh Hien, owner of BánhMi Spot, has suggested removing benches to curb the issue.
Ald. Anthony Quezada has stated that the city will work to manage the space better, rather than removing features that make it welcoming. The city will also work to address maintenance concerns and improve trash collection.
