Los Angeles, CA – A new report from the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority shows a 3.4% increase in homelessness in the city. Local activist John Alle criticized Mayor Karen Bass, saying she has neglected her responsibility to address the issue.
Homelessness on the Rise
The report found that 45,194 people are experiencing homelessness in LA, with 29,115 living on the streets. Alle, a Santa Monica business owner, said he has invited Mayor Bass to see the conditions in some of the city’s hardest-hit neighborhoods, but she has refused.
Alle’s coalition has partnered with an artificial intelligence company to create a hotline that has helped over 40 homeless people return to their home states. He said the most ‘heartbreaking’ part is watching families reunite with loved ones who have recovered from their struggles.
Mayor Bass has argued that funding cuts at the federal and state levels have contributed to the rise in homelessness. However, Alle said the city needs to take responsibility for addressing the issue, rather than blaming external factors.
