Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has asked an Orleans Parish court to subpoena the records of District Attorney Jason Williams and the special prosecutor handling her July 2 indictment. Murrill is trying to have the criminal charges against her tossed.
Background
The charges stem from letters she wrote to city officials in May warning they could be removed from office for calling a special election for the newly combined clerk of court office in New Orleans. The Louisiana Supreme Court quickly intervened by staying the indictment in an emergency 4-3 ruling the day after it was issued.
Murrill’s subpoena filings ask for a litany of records, documents and internal communications between Special Prosecutor Laurie White, the district attorney’s office, Judge Leon Roche, the mayor’s office, other city officials and “any member of any media organization,” among others.
