Knoxville residents and business teams came together for United Way of Greater Knoxville’s 2026 Week of Caring, held September 21‑24, turning a handful of days into lasting improvements across the region.
Volunteer effort in numbers
Over 150 volunteers representing 14 corporate teams contributed more than 420 hours of hands‑on service. The groups assembled 350 care kits and delivered an estimated $16,000 in service value to local nonprofits and schools.
Projects that made a difference
At Beaumont Magnet Academy, volunteers from Erie Insurance refreshed the school’s exterior with fresh paint, giving the building a brighter, more welcoming look. Phillips Infrastructure teams rolled up their sleeves at the Knoxville Botanical Gardens, digging roots, spreading mulch and preparing sunflowers for children’s enrichment programs.
Helping Mamas Knoxville received a boost from volunteers with PYA Accountants & Advisors and Realty Trust Group, who landscaped the grounds, cleaned the organization’s mobile van and packaged essential items for families in need. Executive Director Tess Freer noted that such projects are vital to the organization’s small staff, allowing them to focus on direct services.
Other volunteers set up a podcast studio at the YWCA Phyllis Wheatley Center and organized the Red Bird Community Store at Wesley House Community Center, expanding resources for residents.
Why the effort matters
United Way President and CEO Chrystal Armstrong Brown emphasized that the Week of Caring lets businesses and individuals contribute time and talent in ways that multiply the impact of organizations already serving the community. For many volunteers, the experience offered something beyond dollars and hours – a chance to connect with neighbors whose lives are directly affected by their service.
“Neighbors helping neighbors” was the unifying motivation behind each project, whether it was painting a school, planting a flower, or simply showing up when help was needed. The event demonstrated that meaningful change does not always require grand gestures; small, consistent acts of service can strengthen the fabric of East Tennessee.
Looking ahead
United Way of Greater Knoxville encourages residents to continue the spirit of service throughout the year. Information about upcoming volunteer opportunities is available on the organization’s website, inviting more community members to experience the personal and collective rewards of giving back.
