When the autumn leaves began to fall, students at the Knoxville campus of OneSchool Global turned National Make a Difference Day into a tangible act of service for their community. On Saturday, October 24, they gathered 200 clothing items—coats, shirts, and other garments—totaling about 180 pounds, and delivered them to Knox Area Rescue Ministries (KARM).
Local impact of a national initiative
The donation was part of a coordinated effort that involved 17 OneSchool Global campuses across North America. Together, the schools contributed more than 1,800 pounds of clothing to charitable organizations, demonstrating how a shared purpose can amplify local impact.
KARM’s representative praised the Knoxville students, saying, “We are so grateful for the generosity of the Knoxville OSG campus’s donation to our organization, and what your school does and represents truly benefits our community.” The partnership aligns with the school’s emphasis on compassion, responsibility, and service.
Educational value for students
Jonathan Borys, regional head of school at OneSchool Global, noted that the project gave students a clear view of how simple acts—like donating a coat—can help neighbors facing difficult circumstances. He added that the experience reinforced the idea that communities can achieve great things when they work together toward a shared purpose.
Beyond the clothing drive, the school encourages students to explore other ways to serve, from reading to outdoor activities, especially as the cooler weather of November arrives.
Family-friendly November activities in Knoxville
The Knox County Public Library is offering a range of resources for children and teens throughout the first week of November, including storytimes, educational programs, and digital materials. Families can check the library’s November calendar for program details, age recommendations, and any registration requirements.
November also provides an ideal backdrop for families to explore East Tennessee’s natural beauty. Local trails invite walkers to observe seasonal changes, listen for birds, and identify trees, turning a simple family walk into an educational adventure.
Continuing the spirit of service
The OneSchool Global students’ effort reminds us that making a difference does not always require grand gestures. A donated coat, a shared book, or an afternoon spent learning can have a lasting impact on neighbors in need.
As the month progresses, the library and community organizations will continue to host events that encourage young people to read, explore, and serve. Readers with youth achievements or activities to share are invited to submit them to KnoxTNToday.
For more information on upcoming programs, visit the Knox County Public Library website or the KARM site. Together, Knoxville’s families, schools, and nonprofits are shaping a season of generosity and learning.
