Klay Thompson joins Miami Heat, cites family ties and chance to win

Veteran sharpshooter Klay Thompson was introduced Tuesday as the newest member of the Miami Heat. The former Golden State Warrior emphasized his family’s historic ties to South Florida and the team’s competitive atmosphere as the primary reasons for his decision.

Family roots and local connections

Thompson’s father, former NBA player Mychal Thompson, helped lead Miami Jackson High School to a state title in 1974. His brother, Mychel, attended the same high school in Oregon that Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra once called home. Thompson also noted the proximity to relatives living in the Bahamas, adding a personal dimension to his move.

Contract details and roster outlook

After clearing waivers following a buyout from the Dallas Mavericks, Thompson signed a two‑year contract worth roughly $11.5 million. The second year is at his option, giving him flexibility should the team’s performance exceed expectations. He will join a roster that already features Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bam Adebayo and former Warriors teammate Andrew Wiggins, while the Heat also added Tim Hardaway Jr. this summer.

Thompson, currently fourth on the NBA’s all‑time three‑point list, left about $10 million on the table to pursue the opportunity to win at a high level. “I’ve tasted winning before and there’s really nothing like it,” he said. “The chance to win again with a championship‑caliber club was irresistible.”

Coach Spoelstra’s praise

Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra praised Thompson’s championship pedigree, calling him “one of the best who’s ever done it.” Spoelstra highlighted Thompson’s defensive instincts and basketball IQ, noting that the veteran knows how to contribute on both ends of the floor. “We’ve always had great respect for him,” Spoelstra added. “He knows how to win and how to help others.”

Impact on the Heat’s season outlook

With Thompson’s addition, the Heat’s front office believes the team’s ceiling has risen dramatically. Spoelstra said the roster now has “limitless” potential and expects a surge of national attention throughout the season. The move follows Miami’s aggressive off‑season activity, which also saw the acquisition of Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis from Milwaukee in exchange for Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel’el Ware and Kasparas Jakucionis.

Thompson’s presence adds another elite shooter to a lineup already known for its defensive tenacity and fast‑break efficiency. As the Heat prepare for the upcoming season, fans can anticipate a blend of veteran experience and youthful energy aimed at returning the franchise to the NBA Finals.

Looking ahead

Thompson expressed excitement about the upcoming training camp and the chance to reunite with former teammate Stephen Curry’s former rival in a new setting. “It’s kind of a redemption season for me to show I can still make an impact on winning and do it consistently,” he said. “I can’t wait to get to work.”
