King Charles faces criticism over Diana remarks as Prince Harry returns to Britain

London – King Charles is enduring a turbulent week as a new book by Diana’s brother, Earl Charles Spencer, alleges the monarch said, “Rest assured, we’ll forget her soon enough” in the days after her 1997 death. The claim has dominated front pages across the United Kingdom, prompting a pointed response from Buckingham Palace.

Palace response and public reaction

In a statement, the palace said the king is “mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss.” The Daily Mail headlined the story “King at war,” while the Daily Telegraph noted the palace’s rebuttal and The Sun referenced past royal criticism with the phrase “Recollections may vary… again.”

Public opinion is split. James Taylor, a 41‑year‑old sales executive, dismissed the book’s claims as unprovable and suggested they were a sales tactic. In contrast, 68‑year‑old attorney Terrie Sechrist said the alleged remark reflects poorly on the king, noting that Diana was his wife and the mother of his children.

Prince Harry’s return to the United Kingdom

At the same time, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan are preparing for a series of charitable appearances in London. The Sussexes, who moved to the United States six years ago after stepping down from royal duties, returned to live in Britain last month. Their return surprised even close family members; the king was informed only days before the news became public.

Harry and his older brother, heir‑to‑the‑throne Prince William, remain barely on speaking terms. To avoid confusion about their status, the palace wrote to British officials stating that Harry and Meghan are not working royals and should be treated as private citizens with commercial and charitable interests. A spokesperson for the couple said they were surprised by the palace’s clarification.

Other royal headlines

Meanwhile, the book’s release coincides with the upcoming public display of Diana’s famous “revenge dress,” a strapless black silk gown she wore in 1994 after Charles admitted to adultery. The dress will be exhibited in London before a U.S. auction in December.

Additional royal challenges include the arrest of King Charles’s younger brother, Prince Andrew, on suspicion of misconduct in public office related to his ties with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and ongoing questions about the family’s wealth. Recent polls indicate younger Britons show limited interest in the monarchy.

What this means for the institution

The convergence of these stories places the monarchy under intense scrutiny. While the palace defends the king’s memory of grief, the public debate over the book’s allegations and the Sussexes’ re‑emergence highlights the fragile balance between tradition and modern expectations. How the royal family navigates these challenges may shape its relevance for future generations.
