Keyport expert links Superstorm Sandy flooding to possible cancer cluster

Keyport, N.J. – Residents of the waterfront community are hearing new concerns about a possible cancer cluster after an independent testing expert suggested that floodwaters from Superstorm Sandy in 2012 may have spread contaminants from a nearby unlined toxic waste pit.

Expert claims and testing

Scott Smith, chief executive of US BioSolutions, said his team tested several homes in the town and found elevated levels of carcinogenic substances in a portion of the houses examined. Smith described the landfill adjacent to the community as an “unlined toxic waste pit” that, when inundated by storm surge, could have allowed hazardous material to migrate into residential basements and yards.

“The flooding from Sandy likely carried contaminants from the pit into the surrounding neighborhood,” Smith told local media. “Our preliminary findings show higher concentrations of known carcinogens in some of the homes we sampled, though additional testing is required to confirm the extent of exposure.”

Community response and health concerns

Keyport families have expressed worry about the potential health implications. “We’ve lived here for generations, and the idea that the storm could have brought dangerous chemicals into our homes is frightening,” said longtime resident Maria Alvarez, whose home was among those tested.

Local health officials have not yet released an official assessment. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) confirmed that it is reviewing the situation but has not published any findings or recommendations at this time.

Next steps and calls for action

Smith urged both the NJDEP and community leaders to expand testing to a broader sample of homes and to conduct soil and water analyses in the surrounding area. “A thorough, science‑based investigation is essential to determine whether there is a real health risk and to guide any necessary remediation,” he said.

Community groups are organizing informational meetings to keep residents updated and to advocate for transparent communication from state agencies. “We need clear answers and, if needed, swift action to protect our families,” said John Whitaker, president of the Keyport Neighborhood Association.

Background on Superstorm Sandy

Superstorm Sandy struck the New Jersey coast in October 2012, causing widespread flooding, power outages, and damage to infrastructure. While the storm’s immediate impacts were well documented, long‑term environmental effects continue to be examined, particularly in areas near former industrial sites.

The possibility that storm‑driven flooding could mobilize contaminants from legacy waste sites underscores the importance of ongoing environmental monitoring and community vigilance.

What residents can do

Officials advise homeowners to stay informed about any upcoming testing schedules and to follow any health‑safety guidelines issued by the NJDEP. Residents with concerns about indoor air quality or water safety are encouraged to contact local health departments for resources and support.
