Key Races and Voting Information for LA’s Primary Election

As Los Angeles gears up for the primary election, voters will play a crucial role in shaping the political landscape for the upcoming November general election. The primary will determine the top two candidates for each race, regardless of party affiliation, who will advance to the runoff.

Governor and Mayoral Contests

The race for California governor is highly competitive, with over 60 candidates vying for the position. Among the leading contenders are former U.S. health secretary Xavier Becerra, billionaire Democrat Tom Steyer, and former FOX News host Steve Hilton. Republican candidates include Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco.

In the Los Angeles mayoral race, incumbent Mayor Karen Bass faces a tight contest against Councilmember Nithya Raman and former reality TV star Spencer Pratt. The race is officially nonpartisan, but Bass and Raman are Democrats, while Pratt, a Republican, has received support from President Trump.

Local and Statewide Races

Voters will also decide on eight other statewide offices, including attorney general and lieutenant governor. Additionally, several congressional district races could impact the balance of power in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Los Angeles City Council has seven seats up for grabs, with notable contests in District 11 and District 9. The LA County Sheriff race sees incumbent Robert Luna challenged by Alex Villanueva, whom he defeated in the previous election.

Voting Information

Vote centers are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. for in-person voting or ballot drop-off. Voters can track their ballots and utilize same-day voter registration if needed. Ballots postmarked by Election Day will be counted if received within seven days.
