Kerrville residents gathered this weekend at River Star Arts Park, part of the Hill Country Youth Event Center, to witness a solemn tribute: 500 American flags planted in a field to honor the victims of the September 11 attacks and the men and women who answered the nation’s call.
Family‑driven tribute
The fourth annual Flags of Honor display was organized by Mike and Jan Pieraccini, whose personal loss gives the event deep meaning. Their son, Ryan Pieraccini, was a United States Marine who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. He died six years ago after living with long‑term health effects from his service.
“It’s dedicated to our son, Ryan Pieraccini,” Mike said as volunteers lowered the flags into the ground. “I’m going to have a hard time. But we want to carry his legacy forward and create this.” The Pieraccinis said the flag field is a way to keep Ryan’s memory alive and to remind the community of the promise to never forget the sacrifices made on September 11, twenty‑five years ago.
Community participation and purpose
The event, sponsored by Gunny’s Warriors, provides a place for reflection, remembrance, and unity. Jan Pieraccini expressed hope that the sea of flags would inspire pride in both the community and the country. “I hope it inspires pride in their community and their country,” she said. “I hope it brings people together.” Flags will remain on display until sundown Sunday, with taps played each evening to mark the close of the day.
Local volunteers and families helped plant the flags, turning the park into a visual reminder of national resilience and local service. The display underscores the importance of honoring both the fallen civilians of 9/11 and the veterans who protect the nation’s freedoms.

Organizers plan to continue the annual tradition, inviting new families and veterans to join the effort.
