In an effort to enhance safety in construction zones, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has installed speed enforcement cameras at several active work sites, including I-64 in Shelby County. These cameras have shown promising results, contributing to a 20% decrease in vehicles exceeding the speed limit by more than 10 mph.
How the Cameras Work
The cameras are designed to alert Kentucky State Police troopers stationed nearby when a vehicle is detected speeding. This allows officers to pull over drivers who are violating speed limits in these critical areas. Importantly, the cameras do not collect any personal information from drivers.
Impact and Future Plans
Currently, fines for speeding in these work zones can reach up to $500 when workers are present, emphasizing the importance of adhering to speed limits for the safety of both workers and drivers. Citations are issued only if a vehicle is captured driving more than 11 mph over the speed limit. Encouraged by the early success, Kentucky plans to expand the program by adding at least 12 more cameras across the state. Officials anticipate gathering more comprehensive safety data after a full year of implementation.
