Kentucky is launching a statewide initiative to mark America’s 250th anniversary by inviting people across the Commonwealth to share what their day-to-day lives look like. On Monday, Secretary of State Michael Adams announced the launch of the Kentucky Time Capsule Project.
Project Details
The project encourages Kentuckians to submit stories, photographs, artwork, and messages about their current lives and hopes for the future. A number of submissions will then be placed inside a specially designed time capsule that will remain sealed until 2051.
The time capsule is housed inside a modified bourbon barrel, which Adams said symbolizes Kentucky’s rich heritage. Several prominent Kentuckians have also been invited to contribute items to the time capsule, including U.S. Sens. Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul, Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman, and representatives from the University of Kentucky Athletics Department.
The barrel will travel across Kentucky throughout the year, giving residents an opportunity to see it in person and learn more about the project. After completing its statewide tour, the bourbon barrel will be permanently displayed at the Office of the Secretary of State until it is opened in 2051.
