Kentucky Health Dept. Alerts Richmond and Olive Hill Residents to Possible Measles Exposure

The Kentucky Department for Public Health announced Tuesday that a potential measles exposure has been identified in the cities of Richmond and Olive Hill. Health officials say an out‑of‑state individual who had not received the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine visited multiple businesses in both communities on Monday, Thursday and Friday.

What residents should do

Anyone who believes they may have been in the same locations as the unvaccinated visitor is asked to check their vaccination records immediately. If a person is unsure whether they have received the MMR vaccine, they should contact their health‑care provider for verification. The department also recommends monitoring for the classic signs of measles for up to 21 days after possible exposure. Symptoms include a high fever, cough, runny nose, watery eyes and a distinctive rash.

Current measles situation in Kentucky

To date, the state has confirmed 29 cases of measles in 2026, with 17 of those occurring in August alone. All confirmed cases involve individuals who were either unvaccinated or whose vaccination status could not be determined. Christian County, located in southwest Kentucky, leads the state with 14 confirmed cases this year.

Why vaccination matters

Measles is an extremely contagious respiratory virus that can lead to serious health complications, especially for young children. The Kentucky Department for Public Health emphasizes that the MMR vaccine remains the most effective protection against the disease. The agency’s social‑media post reiterated that vaccination not only safeguards the individual but also helps protect the broader community by limiting the spread of the virus.

How to get the MMR vaccine

Residents who are not up to date on their immunizations can receive the MMR vaccine at local health clinics, pediatric offices, and many pharmacies. The department advises parents to ensure that their children are fully vaccinated according to the recommended schedule, and to discuss any concerns with a trusted medical professional.
