Kentucky fire departments grapple with record diesel costs

Fire departments on the Kentucky side of the Greater Cincinnati region are feeling the pinch of record‑high diesel prices. The national average for diesel has climbed to $6.51 per gallon, roughly $3 more than just a few months ago, and local crews say the surge is making everyday operations increasingly difficult.

Local leaders describe the impact

At the Bellevue‑Dayton Fire Department, Chief Brent Schafer explained that diesel is the lifeblood of every fire engine. “That’s what keeps the trucks running. So without diesel, you know, there’s no response,” he said. Schafer added that the rapid price increase has upended budgeting assumptions. “You’ve seen the impact of these fuel prices. You try to budget for it with an increase over the year, but no one expects it to double in a few months’ time,” he noted.

In Covington, diesel prices sit about 40 cents above the national average, adding another layer of strain for crews who must respond to calls around the clock. Schafer emphasized that the uncertainty of fuel costs makes it hard to plan for the year ahead, especially when call volume remains steady.

Ludlow fire department quantifies the cost

Fire Chief Michael Steward of Ludlow highlighted the concrete financial hit. His department uses up to 1,000 gallons of diesel each month. With diesel now nearly $3 per gallon higher, that translates to an extra $3,000 each month—or roughly $36,000 annually. “The calls for service aren’t going down. But the price of gas is going up,” Steward said.

Steward warned that many departments are currently absorbing the added expense, but that approach cannot continue indefinitely. “These prices are going up with the demand and then unfortunately falls into the citizens where, you know, they have to pay the taxes,” he explained.

Potential repercussions for public safety

Fire officials say the sustained rise in diesel costs could force difficult decisions. Delayed equipment maintenance, postponed purchases of new apparatus, and even personnel cuts are among the scenarios being discussed. The financial burden, they argue, will ultimately be shouldered by taxpayers if no relief is found.

While the situation is local, it reflects a broader national trend of soaring fuel prices that are affecting municipal services across the country. The fire chiefs’ pleas underscore the need for policymakers to consider the downstream effects of energy costs on essential public‑safety operations.
