In Casper, Wyoming, Kelly Walsh High School recently celebrated the achievements of its senior student musicians during the annual College Band Decision Day. This event highlighted the dedication and hard work of six seniors who have committed to furthering their musical education at various colleges and universities.
Sarah Hanson, the Director of Bands at Kelly Walsh High School, expressed immense pride in these students. “Many of them have been studying their instruments since the fifth or sixth grade, some even longer than that,” she noted. “Just like top athletes, these students have spent countless hours practicing, performing, and perfecting their crafts.”
Dr. Joseph Carter, Director of the University of Wyoming Western Thunder Marching Band, emphasized the lifelong benefits of music education. “You don’t have to major in music or become a professional musician to be a lifelong musician,” he said, pointing out that many musicians in his band are non-music majors, with a notable trend of engineering students participating.
Among the celebrated students is Oliver Soulek, a pianist heading to Berklee College of Music to study film scoring and recording. Soulek shared his excitement about the state-of-the-art recording studios at Berklee and his aspiration to follow in the footsteps of renowned composers like Alan Silvestri and John Williams. His passion was solidified after witnessing a live recording session for the film “Avatar: Fire and Ash.”
Another student, Justin Lippincott, plans to attend Renton Technical College to specialize in instrument repair, a field he became passionate about through the influence of a teacher. “There are only three instrument repair schools in the country,” Lippincott remarked, highlighting the uniqueness of his chosen path.
Hanson concluded the event by acknowledging the supportive role of parents and the significance of this milestone for the students. “This is a big deal, and we’re really excited to celebrate them today,” she said, underscoring the community’s pride in these young musicians.
