Kellogg announced it will remove artificial colors from all its cereals by the end of this year, a year ahead of schedule. The company has identified fruit- and vegetable-based juices to give cereals like Froot Loops and Apple Jacks their distinctive colors.

Natural Colors and Preservatives

Kellogg has also invested in equipment to transition to natural colors and is removing BHT, an artificial preservative, from the small number of cereals that still contain it. The change comes after years of pressure from consumers and advocacy groups.

Retailers like Target and Walmart are also forcing companies to act, with Target stopping the sale of cereals with artificial colors by the end of May and Walmart removing artificial colors from its store brands by January 2027.
