Kansas City Current and Sporting Director Vlatko Andonovski Part Ways

The Kansas City Current released a statement on Monday confirming that the club and sporting director Vlatko Andonovski have mutually decided to part ways. The announcement highlighted that both parties concluded Andonovski’s requested shift from coaching to the sporting director role at the end of the 2025 season was not the optimal fit for the organization.

Background on Andonovski’s tenure

Andonovski, 49, was hired as the head coach of the Current on Oct. 23, 2023. In his first full season, he guided the team to the NWSL Shield in 2025, the league’s best regular‑season record. Following that success, the club promoted him to sporting director, appointing former MLS player and coach Chris Armas as his replacement behind the bench.

Before joining Kansas City, Andonovski served as head coach of the U.S. women’s national team from 2019 to 2023, leading the squad to a World Cup final appearance and a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Statement from the club

“The Kansas City Current wishes Vlatko Andonovski well in his future endeavors,” the club’s statement read. “Both parties determined that his requested transition from coaching into the sporting director role at the end of last season was not the right fit.”

The Current emphasized that the decision was mutual and amicable, underscoring the organization’s commitment to maintaining stability and competitive momentum as it prepares for the upcoming season.

What’s next for the Current?

With the sporting director position now vacant, the Current’s front office will begin a search for a new executive to oversee player acquisitions, scouting, and overall roster strategy. The club’s ownership has reiterated its dedication to building a championship‑contending team and supporting the growth of women’s soccer in the Kansas City region.

Fans can look forward to the team’s preseason activities, which will include training camps and exhibition matches aimed at integrating new talent and refining tactics under head coach Chris Armas.

Community reaction

Local supporters expressed mixed emotions on social media. Many praised Andonovski’s contributions to the club’s recent success, while others voiced optimism that fresh leadership in the front office could bring new opportunities for player development and community engagement.

Regardless of the transition, the Kansas City Current remains a cornerstone of the city’s sports landscape, continuing to promote women’s athletics and provide a family‑friendly entertainment option for fans across the metropolitan area.
