Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick received the ACLU Ralph Ellison Award for Defenders of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties in the Arts, Business, Science and Sports. The award recognizes contributions to American thought and culture.

Kaepernick was joined by rock star Bruce Springsteen in receiving the honor. In his acceptance speech, Kaepernick emphasized the importance of defending the rights of others and building community together.

The ACLU’s president, Deborah Archer, praised Kaepernick for his peaceful protest against police violence and racial inequality, which sparked a national conversation about social justice.
