The Justice Department is taking aim at state gun laws after a recent Supreme Court win. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche threatened lawsuits against four states with gun restrictions similar to the Hawaii law that was struck down by the Supreme Court.
Second Amendment Win
The Hawaii law, which presumptively banned guns on private property open to the public unless the property owner gave explicit consent, was deemed unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. The Trump administration supported the Hawaii gun owners who challenged the law, arguing that it violated the Second Amendment.
The Justice Department is now warning states with similar laws, including New Jersey, Maryland, New York, and California, that they could face lawsuits as well. The department also announced two new lawsuits, one challenging Virginia’s ban on semi-automatic rifles and another challenging California’s ban on semi-automatic machine gun convertible pistols, commonly known as Glocks.
The Trump administration has made challenging firearm regulations a priority, and the Justice Department’s actions are seen as a test of the constitutionality of other gun laws. The Supreme Court is also set to hear a case on the constitutionality of bans on semi-automatic rifles.
