Justice Department Seeks Interviews with Fulton County 2020 Election Workers

The Justice Department is making a move to interview poll workers and ballot counters involved in the 2020 election in Fulton County, Georgia. This initiative aims to gather more information about the ballot-processing procedures from that election. The effort was disclosed during a court hearing last week, where a prosecutor working with a grand jury in Fulton County explained the department’s intentions.

Investigation Details

Prosecutor William McComb, speaking at the hearing, stated that the Justice Department seeks the names and addresses of the election workers to facilitate interviews. The goal is to speak with individuals who may have witnessed or participated in activities relevant to the investigation. McComb emphasized that the only way to proceed with this inquiry is through a grand jury subpoena.

The approach has raised concerns about reigniting fraud theories related to the 2020 election, which have been dismissed by various authorities. Despite President Joe Biden winning a significant majority of the votes in Fulton County, former President Donald Trump has continued to claim that the election was rigged against him. The Justice Department has appointed special prosecutors to lead the investigation in Fulton County this year.

Legal and Civic Concerns

Fulton County’s elections office has requested the judge to block the subpoena, arguing that it could deter civic participation in future elections. The county fears that releasing the names and contact details of election workers could lead to targeting and harassment by Trump’s supporters. Kamal Ghali, a lawyer for the county, argued that the subpoena is overly broad and could reopen past events that are beyond the statute of limitations for federal charges.

Judge William Ray II, overseeing the case, expressed concerns about the privacy of election workers who may disagree with the current administration. He has yet to decide on whether to halt the Justice Department’s efforts to collect the workers’ information. The department argues that the grand jury needs the data to determine if there are grounds for a criminal investigation related to the 2020 election.

Previously, the Justice Department had seized all of Fulton County’s 2020 election ballots and related materials. A separate federal judge had dismissed a lawsuit from the county seeking the return of these materials. The ongoing investigation aims to uncover any potential improprieties in the 2020 election and assess if similar issues persist in current or future election cycles.
