Justice Department prosecutor overseeing Trump‑related probe resigns

Washington — The Justice Department announced that Joseph diGenova, the U.S. attorney who has been steering a wide‑ranging investigation into alleged conspiracies against President Trump, has resigned. DiGenova, who joined the department in April to take over the Florida‑based probe, told Reuters the role was “an honor and privilege to serve the president and the department.” He declined to provide further details.

Investigation background

The inquiry, launched under the Trump administration, has examined the 2017 intelligence assessment that Russia sought to influence President Trump’s 2016 campaign, as well as more recent probes by former Special Counsel Jack Smith into the handling of classified documents at Mar‑a‑Lago and attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. To date, the investigation has not produced any criminal charges.

DiGenova, a former U.S. attorney who served under President Ronald Reagan, has publicly aligned himself with President Trump’s view that the original Russia investigation was a politically motivated effort to damage the president. His appointment was part of the administration’s broader effort to pursue what it describes as the president’s perceived enemies and to investigate grievances stemming from those investigations.

Potential impact of the resignation

The departure of the lead prosecutor introduces uncertainty about the next steps of the probe. Some Trump allies have expressed hope that the investigation could eventually target figures such as former CIA Director John Brennan, former FBI Director James Comey, and even Special Counsel Jack Smith, who have already faced charges in separate cases brought by the Trump administration.

Legal experts noted that bringing criminal charges in Florida could be challenging, given that much of the alleged wrongdoing occurred in Washington and Virginia. Additionally, questions remain about how separate investigations into distinct matters might be combined into a single conspiracy case.

Administration’s stance

While the Justice Department has not issued an official comment on DiGenova’s resignation, President Trump’s team has repeatedly emphasized the importance of holding accountable those they view as part of a long‑running criminal conspiracy against the president. The administration continues to assert that the investigation is essential to uncovering the truth and protecting the nation’s constitutional order.

As the probe moves forward without its current lead, the Justice Department is expected to appoint a successor who will continue the effort to examine any potential wrongdoing connected to the president’s alleged victims.
