Jury in Lindsay Clancy murder trial resumes deliberations after deadlock

PLYMOUTH, Mass. – A jury in the high‑profile murder trial of former labor‑and‑delivery nurse Lindsay Clancy reconvened Wednesday after notifying Judge William Sullivan on Tuesday that they could not reach a unanimous verdict. The deadlock forced the judge to remind jurors to keep working toward a decision, a standard instruction when juries struggle to agree.

Trial background

Clancy, 36, is accused of strangling her three young children in 2023. She has pleaded not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility, asserting that severe postpartum psychosis drove her actions. Prosecutors maintain that she was aware of what she was doing and therefore criminally responsible.

Mental‑health evidence

Both the prosecution and the defense presented expert testimony on Clancy’s psychiatric state. Relatives and doctors described a rapid decline in her mental health in the months leading up to the killings, noting multiple medications and a brief psychiatric hospitalization. However, the two sides’ medical experts reached sharply divergent conclusions about whether she was legally insane at the time of the murders.

What a deadlock means

Massachusetts law requires a unanimous jury verdict for either conviction or acquittal. If the jurors remain unable to agree, Judge Sullivan could declare a mistrial. In that event, prosecutors would decide whether to retry the case, drop the charges, or negotiate a plea agreement.

Reactions from the defense

After the court adjourned on Tuesday, Clancy’s attorney, Kevin Reddington, described the continued deliberations as a positive sign. “The fact that they have not said that they’re done is very, very heartening,” Reddington said. “Obviously, they’re working very hard.”

Possible outcomes

If the jury ultimately finds Clancy criminally responsible, she could be convicted of either murder or manslaughter. An acquittal would not automatically free her; a judge could still order confinement to a mental‑health facility if an evaluation determines she poses a danger to the public.
