Jupiter, Fla. – At 12:01 a.m. on Thursday, Jupiter Fire Rescue officially began providing fire‑rescue services to the town, a milestone that ends more than four decades of dependence on Palm Beach County Fire Rescue.
Local effort years in the making
The town’s new department has been teasing its debut for the past ten days, sharing photos and videos of firefighters training and counting down to the October 1 start date. “We have our people. We have our trucks. We have our equipment. We’re ready to go,” said Chief Darrel Donatto during the launch ceremony.
Joint public‑safety partnership
The transition was celebrated Wednesday night with a display of all of Jupiter’s public‑safety vehicles, including police cars, to highlight the growing partnership between the fire‑rescue and police departments. Chief Donatto explained that the two agencies will now work together on several initiatives, such as placing a paramedic on a police boat, supporting the police department’s SWAT medic program, and conducting joint training and leadership development.
County service steps aside
Palm Beach County Fire Rescue, which has served Jupiter for 42 years, formally withdrew its operations after the hand‑off. Division Chief Amanda Vomero described the moment as “a somber event for us,” noting the deep relationships built over four decades. The county shared a video on social media reflecting on its history in Jupiter and thanking residents for their support.
Continued collaboration
Both agencies emphasized that the transition does not mean an end to cooperation. “We are close with them. They’re great folks, great organization. We’re working together,” Donatto said. Vomero added, “If Jupiter needs us and they’re taxed in any way with their resources, they know we’re only a phone call away, and we will be there, and we will respond.”
What this means for residents
With its own fire‑rescue department, Jupiter gains direct control over response times, staffing, and equipment decisions, aligning services more closely with local needs and values. The town’s leadership expects the new department to enhance community safety while preserving the strong ties it has cultivated with the county agency.
Residents can look forward to continued joint training exercises, shared resources, and a seamless transition that prioritizes rapid, effective emergency response for the town of Jupiter.
