A judge has granted a motion to dismiss a U.S. Department of Justice lawsuit seeking Nevada’s unredacted statewide voter registration list. The Secretary of State says Nevada directed the DOJ to the state’s publicly available voter list but declined to disclose further information they argue is protected under Nevada law.
“Today’s ruling is a victory for Nevada voters and their right to have their sensitive personal information protected,” said Nevada Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar. “Nevada is now the 22nd consecutive state or jurisdiction to prevail in federal district court against the Trump administration’s effort to force states to turn over their unredacted voter rolls.
The DOJ argued that Title III of the Civil Rights Act of 1960 authorized it to obtain Nevada’s complete voter-registration list. However, the judge rejected this argument, siding with the state of Nevada.
