A former member of the Mitchell American Legion baseball team, Peyton Mandel, had filed a libel and defamation lawsuit against two regional media outlets, including the Mitchell Republic. The lawsuit claimed that the media outlets had permanently damaged Mandel’s reputation and economic prospects by printing a letter from American Legion Adjunct C.P. Van Delist to the Mitchell Baseball Association last year.
Case Dismissal
Circuit Court Judge David Knoff granted summary judgment to the media companies, effectively dismissing the libel claims against them. The decision was made on Thursday, Aug. 6.
