Jose Rodriguez elected mayor of National City, pledges pro‑union agenda

National City residents voted last week to replace long‑time Mayor Ron Morrison with City Councilmember Jose Rodriguez. The 41‑year‑old Democrat won roughly 55 % of the vote, securing a clear mandate to shift the city’s priorities.

From limited‑government to activist leadership

Mayor Morrison, a conservative‑leaning independent, guided National City for more than 30 years with a limited‑government, pro‑business approach that many credit for reversing blight and stabilizing the city’s finances. He now departs a city that faces a budget shortfall and dense housing challenges.

Rodriguez, who describes himself as a progressive Democrat and strong supporter of labor unions, ran on a platform of “getting things done” for the community. He pledged to address potholes, improve street‑lighting, and create a proactive municipal government that does not wait for requests before acting.

Policy focus and council dynamics

The new mayor highlighted three priority areas: infrastructure repair, public‑service efficiency, and expanded support for working families. He cited his own family’s experience – his father worked as a landscaper and his mother as a hotel room cleaner – as the reason he believes unions protect fair wages and dignity for vulnerable workers.

Rodriguez’s victory could give him a 4‑1 super‑majority on the City Council, depending on the outcome of a still‑tight council race. Such a majority would provide a clear runway for his agenda, though he said he would work with any council member who shares his top priorities.

Community reactions

Supporters welcomed the change. Jessica Villa, a 36‑year‑old urgent‑care employee, said she voted for Rodriguez because she wants more investment in basic services like health care and affordable housing.

Critics, however, expressed concern that the new administration could deepen divisions. Rosie Diaz, a community‑garden cultivator, warned that Rodriguez’s “ego” might divide the city. Fast‑food cashier Jennifer Montes accused him of making misleading statements during council meetings and criticized a campaign ad that labeled his opponent “MAGA Marcus.”

Even among labor groups, opinions differ. The Service Employees International Union local and the firefighters union endorsed Rodriguez, while the police officers’ union remains skeptical after Rodriguez praised an activist who confronted officers during a felony pursuit.

Transition and outlook

Mayor Morrison dismissed Rodriguez’s characterization of his tenure as “stagnation,” calling the new mayor “constantly stirring things up” and accusing him of “run‑around protests.” Despite the sharp rhetoric, Rodriguez thanked Morrison for his service and emphasized a forward‑thinking, collaborative approach.

Rodriguez also noted his willingness to work with former rival Marcus Bush and other council members, stressing that “if they want to get things done, I’ll work with them.” He highlighted a cooperative relationship with fellow councilmember Ditas Yamane, noting their differing backgrounds but shared commitment to solving the housing crisis.

What’s next for National City?

Rodriguez’s inauguration is set for next month. The city will watch closely as the new administration tests its promises against the realities of a tight budget, dense population, and a community split between hopes for activist governance and concerns about division.
