Wyatt Johnston provided the deciding goal in the shootout as the Dallas Stars closed their regular season with a 4-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday night. The victory gave Dallas its third straight season with at least 50 wins as the club finished the schedule 50-20-12.

Justin Hryckowian and Esa Lindell each recorded a goal and an assist, and Mavrik Bourque also scored for the Stars. Dallas’ balanced attack helped them overcome a Sabres team that also reached the 50-win mark this season.

Goaltender Jake Oettinger made 21 saves during the game and stopped two of Buffalo’s four shootout attempts. Buffalo’s Colten Ellis finished the night with 25 saves in regulation and overtime but yielded three of Dallas’ four shootout tries. Johnston’s shootout winner came on a move from the left side, slipping a shot inside the far post past Ellis.

For Buffalo, Zach Benson had a goal and an assist while Josh Norris and Alex Tuch—who notched the 200th goal of his NHL career—also scored. The Sabres held one-goal leads twice in the second period but couldn’t hold them; Hryckowian tied the game at 3 by sliding a shot through Ellis’ legs with about four minutes remaining in that frame. Both teams were already set in their playoff positions, which resulted in a relatively low-key, non-conference finale.

Buffalo rested several regulars after clinching the Atlantic Division, including captain Rasmus Dahlin and top scorer Tage Thompson. Dallas got center Sam Steel back after a nine-game absence with an undisclosed injury, while defenseman Miro Heiskanen missed his third straight game as coach Glen Gulutzan hopes to have him ready for the postseason. Up next, the Stars will host Minnesota in the first round, and the Sabres will host Boston, both beginning their series Saturday or Sunday.
