Johnson County Voters Get Election Primer for Kansas State Board of Education Position 3

Early in‑person voting began Saturday, Oct. 17, and Johnson County voters can continue to cast advance ballots through Election Day on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Among the many contests on the November 3 ballot are a high‑profile Senate race, the mayoral election in Prairie Village, 18 judicial retention votes, and a constitutional amendment that would limit voting in Kansas to citizens only.

Comprehensive Voter Guide for Position 3

The Johnson County Post has assembled an election primer focused on the Kansas State Board of Education Position 3 race. The guide includes a five‑item questionnaire developed from reader input, as well as recorded interviews with the two candidates who responded to the Post’s invitation.

Readers can listen to the full interviews with Amy Diediker and Jim McMullen, and read highlighted excerpts that summarize each candidate’s stance on the issues that matter most to Johnson County families.

How the Primer Was Created

Over the past weeks, the Post hosted 11 candidate forums across seven evenings, covering local races such as Kansas House seats, county commission positions, and the Prairie Village mayoral contest. While a hoped‑for forum for U.S. House candidates did not materialize, the newsroom extended invitations to every candidate running for statewide offices, including U.S. Senate, governor, secretary of state, attorney general, and the State Board of Education seat.

To date, the Post has received eight written responses and recorded interviews with those candidates, plus a separate interview with a candidate for insurance commissioner. In total, about 65 candidates answered the Post’s reader‑generated questionnaires, providing a wealth of information for voters.

Why This Matters to Johnson County Residents

The State Board of Education makes decisions that affect curriculum standards, school funding formulas, and policies that shape the education of Kansas children. By offering a clear, locally focused guide, the Post helps families understand how each candidate’s positions align with community values such as parental involvement, academic excellence, and fiscal responsibility.

Voters can access the primer online, where each question and answer is presented side‑by‑side for easy comparison. The guide also lists secure drop‑box locations for mail‑in ballots, ensuring that every resident has a convenient way to cast their vote.

Support Local Journalism

No other outlet in the area devotes as much effort to providing Johnson County voters with the information they need to make informed choices. If you value this level of coverage, consider becoming a subscriber. Subscriptions start at just $1 per week, helping the Post continue its mission of transparent, community‑first reporting.
