Arlington ISD partners with Java House Grand Prix to expose students to motorsports careers

Arlington Independent School District launched a partnership with the Java House Grand Prix on Tuesday, aiming to broaden high‑school seniors’ awareness of career paths in motorsports and large‑scale events. The collaboration kicked off with a panel titled “The Business of Motorsports” held at the Dan Dipert Career + Technical Center.

Industry professionals share real‑world experience

Panelists representing marketing, communications, partnerships, creative services and event operations described their day‑to‑day responsibilities and the routes they took to reach their positions. “We have a great group of leaders within our team,” said Troy Yarborough, president of the Java House Grand Prix of Arlington. “By being here today, we’re able to share our background and our skills from our leaders within our organization and pass that along to students here within the Arlington school district and talk about ways you can get involved in motorsports and what those avenues could be for your career development.”

Rebecca Durham, director of partnership activation and events for the Grand Prix, emphasized that a love of sport is not a prerequisite for a career in the industry. “You don’t have to be a professional‑level athlete or actually have ever even played sports to work in sports,” she told the students. “Any particular skill that you want to hone, whether it is writing or photography or sales, is a functional area within sports.”

Interactive sessions put students in the driver’s seat

Following the panel, students broke into smaller groups where they tackled real‑world challenges, from drafting partnership proposals to creating promotional graphics. The hands‑on activities highlighted how diverse skill sets—such as writing, photography, sales and project management—contribute to the success of a major racing event.

Durham also walked the students through the process of developing corporate partnerships, explaining how deals are structured, negotiated and activated. Participants asked questions about building professional networks, gaining visibility and showcasing their talents to potential employers.

Building on a successful inaugural year

The partnership builds on a pilot program launched last spring, when students explored construction, hospitality and marketing roles connected to the Grand Prix’s first race day. “This is really to help enrich the student experience here in Arlington ISD, where our students are in sports and entertainment, marketing, and audio‑video, and all of the different aspects behind what goes into making the race come to life,” said Sarah Mahoney, Arlington ISD Career and Technical Education coordinator.

Mahoney added that the Grand Prix team has been proactive in seeking ways to support local youth and deepen its involvement in the community. Through the ongoing partnership, students will continue to receive mentorship from industry experts and experience the excitement of race day firsthand.

Looking ahead

The Java House Grand Prix of Arlington is scheduled to return to the city’s Entertainment District from March 19‑21, 2027. Organizers hope the continued collaboration will inspire more students to consider careers in motorsports, event management and related fields, strengthening the local workforce and reinforcing Arlington’s reputation as a hub for major sporting events.
