The Alamo Has Been Serving Springfield Since 1930

The Alamo, on South Fifth Street, has been open longer than most of Springfield’s residents have been alive. That’s not a boast — it’s just a fact you notice when you walk past the sign and realize the place predates the Second World War by nearly a decade.

I went on a Wednesday around noon, which is the right call. The lunch crowd at the Alamo is a reliable cross-section of the city: state workers from the nearby Capitol complex, retirees who’ve been coming since before they were retirees, a couple of guys in contractors’ gear who ordered without looking at the menu. That last detail tells you something.

The room is not fancy. It is clean, which matters more. Booths along the wall, a bar that has clearly seen some things, lighting that could generously be called atmospheric. The kind of place that stopped worrying about décor around 1962 and has been perfectly right about that decision ever since.

The Alamo is best known for its horseshoe, which is Springfield’s contribution to American cuisine — an open-faced sandwich buried under a mountain of fries and draped in cheese sauce. The Alamo’s version uses thick-cut toast, and the cheese sauce has a sharpness that a lot of places skip. I ordered the ham horseshoe. It arrived in less than ten minutes and looked, as horseshoes tend to, like a small catastrophe on a plate. It was excellent. The fries held up under the sauce longer than you’d expect, and the whole thing cost me under twelve dollars.

If you’re not in a horseshoe mood — a mood I respect but don’t fully understand — the chili is worth your attention. It’s a Springfield-style chili, which means it’s thicker than what most of the country would recognize, and it comes with oyster crackers, and you should probably get it. There’s also a burger that several regulars at the counter were eating with the quiet focus of people who had made a correct decision.

The service is efficient without being brusque. My coffee got refilled twice without my asking. Nobody tried to tell me about the specials in an elaborate way. I was in and out in forty minutes and felt, if anything, better about the world than when I’d arrived.

What makes the Alamo worth your time isn’t nostalgia, exactly. It’s consistency. Coming here in 2024 and eating the same horseshoe that Springfield has been eating for most of a century is a specific kind of satisfaction — not because old things are automatically good, but because this particular old thing actually is. The bar is real, the food is real, and the prices haven’t yet crossed into the territory where you do the math twice.

Parking on Fifth Street is straightforward. The Alamo is open for lunch and dinner most days, though hours can vary, so a quick check before you go is sensible. Bring cash if you have it; they take cards but the cash register looks like it has opinions about plastic.

Go on a weekday if you can. Sit at the bar if a stool is open. Order the horseshoe and don’t second-guess it.
