Local Soccer Teams Shine
Two Johnson County girls soccer teams, Mill Valley and Olathe Northwest, battled it out on May 30 for the title of 6A State Champions, with Mill Valley ultimately winning in double overtime. The Jaguars also swept the Kansas High School Soccer Coaches Association awards, which recognize individual coaches and players.
An Olathe boy, 10-year-old Matteo Rodriguez, who said his love of soccer kept him going through cancer treatment, got the opportunity to meet Lionel Messi and members of the Argentina national soccer team. The team is in Kansas City for the World Cup.
The Johnson County Museum’s award-winning exhibit explores the history of redlining, or denying financial services like mortgages to people in certain neighborhoods based on race. Redlining was declared unconstitutional 50 years ago but has had lasting impacts on the Kansas City metro area.
