This summer, Johnson County is set to become a cultural hub as it welcomes visitors from around the globe for the FIFA World Cup 2026. In anticipation of this international event, the Johnson County Library is enhancing its language resources to foster cross-cultural connections and support both residents and visitors.
Language Meetups and Translation Tools
The Library is introducing World Language Meetups, informal gatherings designed to help individuals practice and maintain language skills in a friendly environment. Each month, a different language will be featured, allowing participants to engage in conversations and improve fluency.
To further assist communication, every Library location now offers Pocketalk translation devices. These devices provide instant two-way translation, ensuring privacy and confidentiality while facilitating interactions between staff and patrons. This initiative aims to make it easier for visitors to access services and information.
Multilingual Online Resources
The Library’s website is now accessible in several languages, including Arabic, Chinese (Simplified), French, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. These languages were chosen based on their prevalence in Johnson County and the anticipated needs of international visitors during the World Cup.
Library cardholders can also access a variety of self-paced online learning platforms. Mango Languages offers conversational lessons in over 70 languages, including American Sign Language, while Rosetta Stone provides immersive language instruction. Additional resources are available through platforms like Udemy, Universal Class, and Kanopy.
Support for English Learners
For those learning English, the Library hosts English Language Conversations both online and in person. These sessions offer a supportive environment for practicing speaking skills and building confidence.
World Languages Collection
The Library’s World Languages Collection includes books, audiobooks, movies, and other materials in multiple languages such as Chinese, French, Japanese, and Spanish. Patrons can explore these collections at Library branches or search the catalog by language.
Visitors from anywhere in the world are welcome at Johnson County Library. Those with identification can obtain a Library card, including options for short-term visitors who may not have proof of address. Additionally, guests can use public computers, Wi-Fi, and other in-person resources available at select branches.
Library staff are also prepared to assist visitors with transit options through ConnectKC2026 and planning guides from KC2026, making the Library a valuable resource for anyone exploring Johnson County during the World Cup.
