In the wake of a fiercely contested primary, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has secured the endorsement of Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D. Thune’s support comes as the Republican Party seeks to consolidate its efforts to retain control of a crucial Senate seat in Texas.
Thune’s Call for Unity
Speaking on the Hugh Hewitt show, Thune emphasized the importance of rallying behind Paxton, the Republican nominee, to ensure Texas remains under GOP leadership. “The voters, Republican voters in Texas spoke last night,” Thune stated. “Ken Paxton is our nominee heading into November, and we got to pivot and go all in to make sure that we keep Texas red, that he wins, and that we keep a far-left liberal out of the United States Senate.”
Thune’s endorsement highlights the party’s strategic focus on defeating Democratic nominee James Talarico in the upcoming election. Talarico, who emerged victorious in his primary, represents a significant challenge for Republicans aiming to maintain their Senate majority.
Republican Concerns and Strategy
Initially, many Senate Republicans, including Thune, supported incumbent Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, during the primary. However, with former President Donald Trump’s last-minute endorsement of Paxton, the dynamics shifted, leading to Paxton’s victory. Despite initial concerns that Paxton’s nomination might benefit Democrats, the focus has now shifted to unifying the party to secure the seat.
Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, and Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso, R-Wyo., have also voiced their support for Paxton, underscoring the necessity of party unity. Moreno described Talarico as a “far-left freak” and emphasized the need to counter his policies, while Barrasso labeled Talarico a “far-left extremist.”
The GOP’s strategy is clear: unite behind Paxton to prevent a Democratic win in Texas, a state that has not elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1988. Thune reiterated this sentiment, stating, “We’ve gotta do everything we can do as a party, to make sure that we win this race. Because, you know, losing is not an option when it comes to the state of Texas, and what it means for our majority in the Senate.”
