Joe Theismann, a Super Bowl champion who spent his entire NFL career with the Washington Redskins, has expressed optimism about the Washington Commanders’ prospects for the upcoming season. Despite a disappointing 5-12 record last year, Theismann believes the team is poised for a comeback.
Injury Challenges and Defensive Improvements
Theismann, now 76, attributed last season’s struggles to injuries in key positions, particularly on defense. The Commanders’ defense allowed an average of 26.5 points per game, ranking 27th in the NFL. To address these issues, the team made significant investments in their defense during the offseason. They drafted Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles with the No. 7 overall pick, a move Theismann believes will be pivotal.
Additionally, the Commanders bolstered their defense with high-profile free-agent signings, including former Los Angeles Chargers pass rusher Odafe Oweh, former Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Leo Chenal, and former Houston Texans defensive tackle Tim Settle. Theismann is confident these additions will strengthen the team’s defensive capabilities.
Offensive Changes and Key Players
On the offensive side, the Commanders have made changes to their coaching staff, promoting David Blough to offensive coordinator. Theismann noted that Blough’s approach will differ from his predecessor, Kliff Kingsbury, with an emphasis on play action and under-center plays. This change is expected to benefit quarterback Jayden Daniels, who had limited playtime last season due to injury but used the time to familiarize himself with the new system.
Star wide receiver Terry McLaurin, who missed much of last year’s offseason program due to a contract holdout, will be actively participating this year, which Theismann sees as a positive development for the team’s offense.
Competitive NFC East
Theismann acknowledged that while the Commanders have improved, so have their NFC East rivals. He highlighted the improvements made by the New York Giants, Dallas Cowboys, and Philadelphia Eagles, noting that the division will be highly competitive. Despite this, Theismann remains hopeful about the Commanders’ chances, citing the team’s strategic changes and new talent as reasons for optimism.
In addition to his football insights, Theismann will be participating in the American Century Championship golf tournament in July, showcasing his athletic versatility.
