Jennifer Eckstrom leads early Tucson Unified School District board results

Early unofficial results released Tuesday night by Pima County elections show incumbent Jennifer Eckstrom leading the race for the Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) governing board with 31.12% of the vote, or 50,738 ballots. Eckstrom, who was recently seen dancing with Congresswoman Adelita Grijalva at the El Casino Ballroom, said the community’s support reflects a shared commitment to keep schools open and serve families.

Other candidates and vote totals

The race for two board seats remains competitive. Civic leader Pilar Acosta Ruiz earned 18.49% (30,143 votes), while University of Arizona student Tre’Davon Rhodes received 17.60% (28,698 votes). Fellow incumbent Val Romero, a local businessman, posted 17.59% (28,673 votes), and educator Skye Fernandez garnered 15.19% (24,769 votes). All five candidates are vying for the two available seats.

Issues driving the election

TUSD faces significant challenges, including school closures, consolidations, and a state‑issued financial‑risk label that threatens funding stability. Eckstrom emphasized that her experience will help navigate these hurdles, stating, “I’m just really happy. Now, we’re right back to work. The school closures, consolidations. The work doesn’t stop. We really have to focus on our students, our families. I have four more years. People can count on me.”

Other candidates highlighted different priorities. Ruiz, with a background in bookkeeping and nonprofit work, pledged greater fiscal transparency. Rhodes, a student, campaigned on expanding college‑ready programs. Romero stressed business‑friendly policies to attract partnerships, while Fernandez advocated for stronger teacher support and parental involvement.

Community response

Local residents gathered at the dance hall and elsewhere to watch the vote count, expressing optimism that the board will prioritize families and uphold the district’s educational mission. Many parents voiced concerns about potential school closures and urged the board to protect neighborhood schools.

The new board terms begin in January, giving the elected members time to prepare for the upcoming budget cycle and address the state’s financial‑risk designation. Stakeholders anticipate that the board’s composition will shape decisions on resource allocation, school consolidation plans, and strategies to improve student outcomes.

What’s next

Final certified results are expected later this week as additional precincts report. Voters and community leaders will continue to monitor the tally, especially as the district navigates its financial challenges and seeks to maintain stability for students and families across Tucson.
