A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Japanese city of Kumamoto, causing a shopping mall to partially collapse and trapping several people inside.
According to Japan’s public broadcaster NHK, about 50 people were injured in the blast, and local police initially reported nine people unaccounted for.
The earthquake also caused a highway bridge to buckle and at least one other building to collapse.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated that the number of casualties and extent of the damage was unclear and still being assessed.
