Utah golf fans have a reason to be excited this week. Jackson Koivun, the 21‑year‑old who helped the United States rally to a Presidents Cup victory, is set to tee off Thursday at the Bank of Utah Championship at Black Desert Resort in Ivins.
Presidents Cup hero steps onto a new stage
Koivun entered the Presidents Cup as a rookie and a somewhat controversial captain’s pick by Brandt Snedeker, but he quickly proved his worth. Paired with Justin Thomas, he and Thomas defeated Corey Conners and Nico Echavarria 4 and 3 in the opening four‑ball match. The duo then split a four‑ball match against Sungjae Im and Min Woo Lee on Saturday.
On Sunday, Koivun faced South Korean star Si Woo Kim. After falling two down through the first ten holes, Koivun rallied to win the match 2 up, sealing the victory with an eight‑foot putt on the 18th. His 2½ points were a key contribution to the United States’ comeback win.
From college champion to PGA Tour contender
Before turning professional, Koivun helped Auburn University capture the NCAA championship in June. He earned his first PGA Tour win at the 3M Open in July, after only three starts as a pro, and now looks to add another triumph in Utah.
“I’m definitely a little tired but excited to come out here and compete,” Koivun told Golf Channel. “Just feeling like I’m coming off a good week at the Presidents Cup and before in Asheville. Just kind of keep the ball rolling coming into Utah.”
What to expect at Black Desert Resort
Black Desert Resort’s course is known for its dramatic desert scenery and challenging layout. Koivun said he has never played the venue before but is confident in his preparation. “I think iron play’s going to be really important. I think there’s going to be some low scores, as shown last year. The course definitely has its teeth, but if you drive it well and keep it in the fairway, you can make a lot of birdies,” he explained.
The tournament will feature a field of seasoned professionals, but Koivun will be the sole U.S. Presidents Cup team member competing this week. He will face two International team members: Canada’s Nick Taylor and South Africa’s Christiaan Bezuidenhout.
Local impact and community excitement
Ivins and the surrounding Washington County community anticipate a boost in tourism and local business as the tournament draws fans from across the country. Hotels, restaurants, and retailers are preparing for increased traffic, and the event provides a showcase for Utah’s natural beauty and hospitality.
“Utah is beautiful, and this definitely lives up to expectations,” Koivun said, highlighting the state’s appeal to both players and spectators.
As the Bank of Utah Championship gets underway, Koivun’s recent success and youthful energy add an extra storyline for fans watching the next generation of American golf talent take the stage.
