Jackson, WY – In a move aimed at supporting active‑travel families and individual cyclists, Jackson Hole Airport has opened five free bike lockers for public use. Four lockers sit in the short‑term parking lot and are available on a first‑come, first‑served basis, while a fifth locker located at the airport’s administration building is reserved for employees.
How the lockers became available
The lockers were donated by Friends of Pathways (FOP) after the organization no longer needed them at the newly opened Stilson Transit Center. After a fresh coat of paint and minor lock adjustments, the airport prepared the units for travelers.
Airport officials stress safety
Jackson Hole Airport Chief Communications Officer Jeremy Barnum and FOP Communications and Advocacy Director Sam Petri told Buckrail that cyclists should exercise extreme caution when riding to the airport. Barnum recalled a ride where an elk crossed the entrance road, noting that “seeing an elk on the way to a commercial service airport is something not many can claim.” Both officials have personally biked to the airport and understand the unique terrain.
Guidelines for cyclists
To keep the experience safe, the airport recommends the following:
- Use extreme caution when crossing US‑89 from the bike path to the airport entrance; the speed limit is 55 mph during daylight and traffic can be heavy.
- Follow all traffic rules on the entrance road, as there is no dedicated bike path.
- Wear a properly fitting helmet.
- Secure any luggage or backpacks so they do not unbalance the bike.
- Watch for wildlife, especially elk and moose, near the path and entrance road.
- Note that the parallel pathway from town is closed to all traffic from Nov. 1 through Apr. 30 to reduce conflicts with migrating elk.
Who might benefit
Petri explained that while a family of seven may not find the lockers practical, a “sporty person” heading out on a short trip with a lightweight bike or e‑bike can avoid using a car altogether. The airport asks users to limit locker use to a maximum of 30 days.
Community impact
The addition of free bike storage aligns with growing interest in e‑bikes and sustainable travel options in Teton County. By offering a secure, no‑cost solution, the airport hopes to encourage more residents to consider two‑wheel travel for short‑haul flights, reducing vehicle congestion and supporting healthier, family‑friendly transportation choices.
