Jackson, WY – The Jackson Community Blood Drive will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 14, from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and again on Thursday, Oct. 15, from 7:30 a.m. to noon. Both sessions are being held at the Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church, providing a convenient location for local volunteers.
How to Participate
Donors can schedule an appointment through the Vitalant website at vitalant.org or call the dedicated line at (877) 258‑4825. For those who prefer to show up without an appointment, walk‑ins are also accepted, ensuring that anyone who wishes to give can do so.
Why the Blood Drive Matters
The American Red Cross estimates that the United States needs roughly 29,000 units of red blood cells each day. In addition, about 5,000 units of platelets and 6,500 units of plasma are required daily. These life‑saving components are essential for patients undergoing surgery, trauma care, cancer treatment, and many other medical procedures.
Type O negative red cells are especially valuable because they can be transfused to patients of any blood type, yet only about 7 % of Americans have this universal donor type. Likewise, AB plasma can be given to all recipients, but only 4 % of the population possesses AB blood. The scarcity of these universal types makes community donations all the more critical.
Local Impact
Blood collected during the Jackson drive will be sent to regional hospitals, including St. John’s Health, helping to keep their blood banks stocked and ready for emergencies. Blood‑drive coordinator Jolene Moulder emphasized the ongoing need, stating, “Red blood cells have a shelf life of 42 days, but the demand for blood is unceasing. We must rise to the occasion to ensure hospital shelves, including those at St. John’s Health, are well‑stocked.”
What Donors Can Expect
Donors will undergo a brief health screening, followed by the collection of whole blood, platelets, or plasma, depending on eligibility and need. The process typically takes 30‑45 minutes for whole‑blood donations and up to an hour for platelet or plasma donations. After giving, volunteers are encouraged to stay hydrated and enjoy a light snack provided on site.
Community Support
The blood drive is organized in partnership with Vitalant, a nonprofit blood‑collection organization, and supported by local volunteers and businesses. Community members are urged to spread the word, invite friends and family, and consider making a regular donation schedule to help meet the nation’s ongoing demand.
