The Portland Timbers have announced a significant change in their coaching staff, appointing Jack Cassidy as the interim head coach. Cassidy, who previously led the Timbers2 team, steps into this role as the club continues its search for a permanent head coach following the departure of Phil Neville in late May.
Leadership Transition
General Manager Ned Grabavoy expressed confidence in Cassidy’s abilities, noting his impressive performance with Timbers2. “Jack has impressed in his first year with Timbers2 and we see this as the right temporary staffing structure until we complete the coaching search,” Grabavoy stated. Under Cassidy’s leadership, Timbers2 achieved a 6-2-4 record, positioning them well in the MLS NEXT Pro season.
As Cassidy takes on his new responsibilities with the first team, Timbers2 assistant coach Andrés Flores will assume leadership of the second team. Timbers2 serves as a development squad where players compete against other MLS clubs’ second teams.
Staff Changes
Alongside Cassidy’s appointment, the Timbers announced the release of assistant coaches Dave Van Den Bergh and Alex Dodgshon, director of scouting Nacho Leblic, and Timbers2 goalkeeping coach Steve Reese. Grabavoy extended gratitude to the departing staff for their contributions to the club.
The Timbers are currently on a three-week break for the summer international window ahead of the World Cup, providing Cassidy with a unique opportunity to settle into his interim role. No timeline has been provided for Cassidy’s tenure as interim head coach.
