It’s Fall Garden Time Already – August is Seed Starting Season

August Is the Perfect Month to Start Seeds in North Texas

Every August in North Texas feels the same: you step outside, the heat hits you like a wall, and you wonder how anything green is still alive. The garden looks tired, the soil feels like it’s radiating heat, and even the hardiest plants seem to be counting the days until cooler weather. It’s the season when gardeners start to question their life choices.

But here’s the twist — this blazing, unforgiving month is exactly when the fall garden begins.

It doesn’t look like it. It doesn’t feel like it. But if you want broccoli, cabbage, kale, lettuce, herbs, and all the cool‑season crops that make fall the easiest and most rewarding gardening season in North Texas, August is your moment. Not for planting outdoors, but for starting seeds.

At Two Doves Bees & Gardens in Wylie, we’ve learned that fall gardening is really a game of timing. Our first frost usually doesn’t arrive until mid‑November, which means fall crops need a head start long before the weather cools. If you wait until it “feels” like fall, you’re already behind. The soil is too hot for direct sowing right now, but seeds started indoors or in a shaded outdoor setup will be ready to transplant the moment the heat breaks.

Inside our seed room, while the sun blazes outside, trays of tiny green seedlings quietly get to work. Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, bok choy, parsley, cilantro, and lettuce varieties that can handle the tail end of summer — they all begin their journey now. These seedlings will spend the next few weeks growing strong under lights or in bright shade, protected from the worst of the heat. By late September or early October, when the nights finally dip below 80 degrees, they’ll be ready to move into the garden.

Starting seeds in August also gives you something gardeners desperately need this time of year: hope. When the tomatoes have shut down, the peppers are sulking, and the figs are dropping leaves to conserve energy, those little seedlings remind you that the best season is still ahead. Fall gardening in North Texas is calmer, cooler, and far more forgiving. Pest pressure drops. Growth becomes steady. Plants look happier. And you get to enjoy harvests long after summer gardens have given up.

Seed starting in August doesn’t require anything fancy. A sunny windowsill, a small grow light, or a shaded porch can all work. Airflow is important — a small fan keeps seedlings sturdy and prevents damping off. Water gently, keep the soil moist but not soggy, and let the seedlings grow until the weather shifts. When the highs settle into the 80s, it’s transplant time.

So yes, it’s blazing hot. Yes, the garden looks rough. Yes, you’re probably watering more than you’d like. But this is the moment to think ahead. Fall gardening is the reward for surviving August, and it starts with a handful of seeds and a little patience.

If you begin now, your September and October garden will thank you — and your future self will too.
