Italy Sees Consumer Confidence Rise in May Despite Business Setback

In a surprising turn of events, consumer confidence in Italy has seen a notable rise in May, according to data released by the national statistics institute ISTAT. The consumer confidence index increased to 93.4 from 90.8 in April, surpassing the median forecast of 90.1 from a Reuters poll of analysts. This recovery comes after a period of decline and offers a glimmer of hope for the euro zone’s third-largest economy.

Business Morale Faces Challenges

Conversely, the business morale index, which combines surveys from the manufacturing, retail, construction, and services sectors, has dropped to 94.1 from 95.1 in the previous month. This marks the lowest level since September of last year, indicating challenges in the business environment. The manufacturing sub-index remained stable at 87.9, suggesting that while consumer sentiment is improving, businesses are facing hurdles.

The Italian government, led by Giorgia Meloni, recently adjusted its economic growth forecast to 0.6% for this year and the next, down from previous targets of 0.7% and 0.8%. This revision reflects the impact of rising energy prices and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The government projects a growth rate of 0.8% for 2028, which would mean six consecutive years of growth below 1%.

These developments highlight the complex economic landscape in Italy, where consumer optimism is tempered by business challenges and broader economic uncertainties.
