Rome – Italy’s national statistics agency ISTAT released updated demographic forecasts on Monday that spell a stark future for the nation’s families and social safety net. According to the new projections, the country’s resident population is expected to shrink by almost 4 million people by 2050, falling from 58.9 million at the start of 2025 to roughly 55 million.
Births continue to tumble while deaths climb
The long‑term decline is driven by a persistent drop in births and a rise in deaths as the post‑war baby‑boom generation ages. The proportion of the population in the working‑age bracket (15‑64) is slated to fall from 63.4 % to 55.3 % over the same period. A smaller labor pool combined with a growing number of pensioners will create “new challenges to the economic system and welfare,” ISTAT warned.

ISTAT’s data show that poorer southern regions are projected to suffer the steepest losses, with the population expected to drop from 19.7 million in 2025 to 16.7 million by 2050. Central and northern areas will see a more modest decline, but the overall national trend remains downward.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who took office in 2022, has repeatedly said that boosting the birth rate is a top priority for her administration. Despite policy initiatives aimed at supporting families, the latest figures suggest that results have been limited so far.
