Israeli Airstrikes in Lebanon Claim Lives Amid Ceasefire Tensions

In a tragic escalation of ongoing tensions, Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon on Saturday resulted in the deaths of nine individuals, including three members of the Lebanese military. This incident comes just days after a ceasefire agreement was reached between the two nations, facilitated by U.S.-brokered talks.

Details of the Incident

The Lebanese army reported that one of the airstrikes targeted a road connecting the city of Nabatiyeh with the town of Marjayoun, claiming the lives of a brigadier general, a captain, and another soldier. The Lebanese state-run National News Agency confirmed an additional airstrike in the southern village of Saksakiyah, which killed six people and injured four others.

The Lebanese army condemned the attacks, stating, “The continued, deliberate, and repeated Israeli aggression against Lebanon, its people, and its army only strengthens our resolve, faith, and determination.” The army accused Israel of attempting to undermine efforts to restore stability and establish a comprehensive ceasefire.

Political Reactions

There has been no immediate response from the Israeli military regarding the airstrikes. The ceasefire agreement, which was recently declared, has been met with resistance from Hezbollah, a militant group in Lebanon, which has refused to adhere to the truce.

Lebanon’s president and prime minister have criticized Iran for opposing the ceasefire, accusing Tehran of using Lebanon as a “bargaining chip” in its negotiations with Washington. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded by deflecting blame onto Israel, suggesting that Iran is not the true adversary.

Background of the Conflict

The conflict began on March 2 when Hezbollah launched rockets into northern Israel, following Israeli and U.S. attacks on Iran. Since then, Israel has initiated a ground invasion of Lebanon, capturing approximately a fifth of the country and displacing over a million people. The ongoing conflict has resulted in the deaths of more than 3,500 people in Lebanon and at least 29 Israeli soldiers and three civilians.
