Is Spokane’s Best Breakfast Worth the Line at Frank’s Diner?

What actually happens at Riverfest, and is it worth rearranging your weekend for? That’s the question I kept getting from friends visiting from Seattle last summer, and honestly, I didn’t have a crisp answer until I went myself.

Riverfest Spokane takes place each summer along the banks of the Spokane River, anchored to the greenspace around Riverfront Park. It’s a free, multi-day outdoor music and arts festival that feels less like a curated brand experience and more like the city just decided to throw a big, genuinely inclusive party for itself. No wristbands to hunt down, no VIP tiers that make you feel broke for not upgrading. You walk in, find a patch of grass, and stay as long as you want.

The music programming is the main draw, and it covers real ground — regional folk acts, Pacific Northwest indie bands, a jazz set or two that draws an older crowd who knows how to actually listen, and at least one headliner that makes you wonder how they got the booking. The stages are close enough together that you can drift between them without losing the vibe, and the sound quality at the main stage is legitimately good. Whoever they’re using for production has figured out the river canyon acoustics.

Food and drink vendors circle the perimeter, and this is where Spokane’s local restaurant scene gets a moment. I spotted booths from a couple of South Perry regulars, a wood-fired pizza operation I’d never seen before but immediately want to track down, and a cider tent that was doing brisk business by noon. Lines move, vendors are friendly, and nothing I tried was overpriced by festival standards — figure eight to fourteen dollars for most food items, beer and cider around six.

The crowd skews broad in the best way. You’ll see families with wagons and sunscreen, college kids from Gonzaga and WSU making a day of it, retirees who’ve been coming for years and have strong opinions about the lineup. Spokane is a genuinely working-class city in a lot of ways, and Riverfest reflects that — nobody’s performing cool, people are just there to have a good time.

If you go, arrive before noon on Saturday to find parking without stress. The Riverfront Park area has structured lots nearby, but the walk from the Monroe Street Bridge is short and pleasant. Bring a blanket or low camp chair for the lawn sections; the ground stays dry through August. Sunscreen matters more than you’d think because the river corridor doesn’t offer a lot of shade between the stages.

The weekend lineup is typically announced in late spring, and local radio stations — particularly KEXP affiliates and community stations — will tip you off. Keep an eye on the city’s parks department announcements or the Riverfest social accounts for the schedule drop. Parking on Sunday afternoon gets chaotic near the park’s east entrance, so plan to loop back toward the Convention Center garage if you’re coming late.

Is it worth rearranging your weekend? Yeah, without much hesitation. It’s the kind of event that reminds you why people actually choose to live in a mid-sized city — close enough to feel intimate, big enough to surprise you.
