Irish soccer team protests Israel match with black armbands and handshake boycott

On Sunday, the Ireland national soccer team faced Israel in a Nations League match held in Debrecen, Hungary. The game, already controversial due to Israel’s military response in Gaza after the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks, became a stage for a visible protest by the Irish players.

Protest actions on the field

Before the Israeli national anthem, the Irish squad donned black armbands and stood with their hands behind their backs, a symbolic gesture of mourning for innocent lives lost in the conflict. Captain Dara O’Shea approached the midfield for the pre‑match handshake ceremony, shaking hands with officials but deliberately not extending a handshake to any Israeli player.

Individual dissent

Goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu announced he would not play against Israel, stating his “personal belief that the killing of innocent people is wrong.” He clarified that his stance is not directed at the Israeli people or the Jewish community, but at the reported atrocities in the region.

FAI response and match outcome

The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) had earlier sought to move the fixture to a neutral venue without spectators and had petitioned UEFA to ban Israel from international competition. Those efforts were unsuccessful, and the match proceeded as scheduled. After a four‑hour deliberation and a vote among the players, the team decided to compete.

Israel’s Football Association reiterated that politics and sports should remain separate. Despite the protests, Ireland dominated the game, winning 3‑0.

Broader context

Ireland has been a vocal critic of Israel’s actions in Gaza, with Prime Minister Micheál Martin condemning antisemitism while describing Israel’s military response as “absolutely disproportionate.” The match highlights the ongoing tension between sporting events and geopolitical issues, especially when public sentiment calls for boycotts or demonstrations.
