Iraq Confirms Drone Attacks on Saudi East-West Pipeline Launched from Iraqi Territory

Baghdad announced Saturday that drone attacks on Saudi Arabia’s vital East-West oil pipeline were launched from Iraqi territory. Prime Minister Ali al‑Zaidi ordered an immediate investigation, dismissed the provincial operations commander and pledged a thorough probe.

Saudi response and regional impact

Saudi Arabia shut the cross‑country pipeline as a precautionary measure after the attacks, citing concerns for safety and stability. The Saudi Foreign Ministry blamed the drones that originated in Iraq but said the kingdom would not retaliate, giving the Iraqi government a chance to take necessary measures.

The East‑West pipeline is a critical conduit for Saudi oil exports, especially since the Iran‑Israel conflict disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. According to the International Energy Agency, Saudi oil shipments through the Red Sea port at the pipeline’s terminus have more than doubled since the war began.

Iraq closes Iran border crossings

In a related move, Iraq sealed two major border crossings with Iran – Shalamcheh and Chazabeh – halting all passenger and commercial traffic. Deputy Governor Valiollah Hayati of Iran’s Khuzestan province warned travelers and traders to avoid the crossings until further notice.

These closures come amid heightened security concerns after Tehran‑backed Iraqi militias have targeted U.S.‑linked sites in Iraq and coordinated with Yemen’s Houthi rebels to strike Saudi interests.

Potential oil‑price repercussions

Crude prices surged above $100 a barrel this week, giving Tehran additional leverage in any diplomatic talks. Analysts warn that the Houthi seizure of Yemen’s port city of Mokha could further disrupt Red Sea shipping and push oil prices higher.

While the Saudi government has opted for restraint, the incident underscores the fragile security environment across the Middle East and the interconnected nature of regional energy infrastructure.

International reactions

U.S. officials have not issued a formal statement, but the Trump administration continues to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing the importance of protecting global energy markets and supporting allies in the region.

Further updates are expected as Iraqi investigators gather more details and as regional powers assess the broader implications for trade and security.
