Iran’s World Cup match against Belgium on Sunday was marked by protests and controversy, both on and off the field. The Iranian national team has been facing challenges throughout the tournament, including restrictions on their travel and accommodations.
Protests and Controversy
Outside the stadium, a few hundred people demonstrated against Iran’s government, with some verbal altercations and a scuffle after the match. Inside, some fans carried pre-revolutionary flags, which seemed to be at least as visible as the official flag of Iran itself.
The Iranian soccer federation has complained about the restrictions on their team, including the barring of some officials and staff, and the requirement to shuttle to and from Mexico instead of staying in Tucson, Arizona. The team’s players and coach have also spoken out about the challenges they are facing.
Despite these challenges, the Iranian team is focused on their next match, against Egypt, and is hoping to bring their full team to Seattle for the game. As Iranian national team player Alireza Jahanbakhsh said, ‘We don’t ask for much. We just ask for the same procedure as for all the other 47 teams.’
